Nebraska Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of 1,200+ Pounds of Illegal Drugs

10 March 2025

Nebraska law enforcement intercepted a major drug shipment during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Lincoln, seizing over 1,200 pounds of illegal substances, including 1,129 pounds of marijuana, 133 pounds of THC concentrates, and three pounds of psilocybin mushrooms. Deputies pulled over 41-year-old John Silsby, who was allegedly transporting the narcotics from California to North Carolina. A search of the U-Haul he was driving also uncovered four firearms, multiple knives, and over $1,100 in cash. Silsby was charged with multiple felony offenses, including possession with intent to deliver and possession of firearms while committing a felony. His bond was set at $80,000, with a court hearing scheduled for April 7.

The large-scale drug seizure highlights ongoing challenges in cannabis trafficking and marijuana laws, particularly in states like Nebraska, where both recreational and medical use remain illegal. The case raises concerns about black-market cannabis operations and their impact on the marijuana business, as strict state regulations continue to drive demand for unregulated products. With neighboring states expanding legal cannabis programs, the arrest could further fuel debate over cannabis policy reform in Nebraska.
